Initially, automatic control could only achieve simple on and off functions, such as DI (Digital Input) and DO (Digital Output), which essentially represented mechanical start and stop operations. Subsequently, these controllable components were centralized in a central control room, enabling batch control operations.

 However, centralized control systems carried the risk of entire control region paralysis due to errors in a single critical path. Consequently, Distributed Control Systems (DCS) gradually gained traction.

DCS is a commonly used discrete control system in the industrial sector. It constructs multiple operator stations to enhance the system's redundant load-bearing capacity, allowing personnel to continue viewing and operating the group monitoring of various devices from the central control room.

 For instance, in industrial boiler production, maintaining the water tank level within a specific range is crucial. Operators can either manually adjust the water level control valve on-site or issue instructions through the DCS to regulate it.

The DCS acts as the brain, responding to situations detected by on-site instrumentation (such as a drop in water level) by issuing instructions (e.g., increasing the inlet valve opening).

 The on-site execution equipment receives these instructions and performs corresponding actions (e.g., increasing the inlet valve opening to maintain the water level within a specified range).
